I’m sure you all know that we couldn’t pass through this renowned wine region without visiting a few vineyards. The first on the list—and the most beautiful—was Wither Hills. A very well-known brand—their winery was absolutely beautiful.
These were showing the different types of soils that grapes are grown in.
Just across the road as we were leaving Wither Hills, I spied this letterbox. No relevance—I just thought it was cute ;)
We moved on to Cloudy Bay, but as lovely as the lady was there that wanted us to taste their lovely wines, they were a bit expensive, and so we moved on.
Across the road to Allan Scott.
When we came out of this winery I noticed this wonderful old bus across the road. As I went to take a photo of it, I heard a loud crack! And this branch just fell out of the tree!
Note to self: this is why you don’t want to park the rig under trees . . .
Lastly, Yealands Estate. We had to travel for about half an hour south to get to this vineyard, but as it was the vineyard that our accommodation host (
Damfam Vineyard) supplied grapes to, we wanted to check it out.
After tasting their wines and viewing an excellent DVD about Yealands, we went on a self-driven tour around their vineyard that had some fabulous views. We won’t mention that my navigational skills got us lost right at the beginning and we ended up going around the wrong way . . . how could that happen? Well, a quick u-turn fixed that!
Yealands are all about sustainability. They bale the old vines and use them for other purposes.
They use wind turbines for energy and on their winery roof they have 1314 solar panels, the largest solar panel installation in New Zealand.
There were some more great views on the way home. Vines
—for as far as the eye can see. Yealands is huge.
